Sinking Cities

Rafael Karlen, The Australian Voices, Camerata - Queensland's Chamber Orchestra

This album is inspired by the ancient Turkish town of Hasankeyf: once one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world, home of empires and civilisations, now deep underwater as part of a project to dam the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. How do you articulate the heartbreak of erasing 12,000 years of history and the drowning of the homes

This album is inspired by the ancient Turkish town of Hasankeyf: once one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world, home of empires and civilisations, now deep underwater as part of a project to dam the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. How do you articulate the heartbreak of erasing 12,000 years of history and the drowning of the homes of thousands of people?

This project explores concepts of erasing history and sinking cities and was a collaborative project with text by Pearly Black. The work grew through several creative sessions with The Australian Voices and Camerata, and I am thrilled with the powerful outcome. Here is a link to the album through ABC Classic.
