I particularly like the quote below. Woohoo.

'If illustration were needed of how music so often speaks more eloquently than words, it would be hard to beat Australian saxophonist and composer Rafael Karlen’s new album: the words sung by Kristin Berardi often segue into expressive vocalese that tells the listener as much if not more than the narrative.' - Nigel Jarrett

Sinking Cities explores erasing histories, as well as themes of loss, modernisation, short term gains, and the replacement of traditional lifestyles.

Trace

Rafael Karlen

Pinnacle

4 stars

This third album from award-winning Brisbane-based saxophonist Rafael Karlen with pianist Steve Newcomb adds guitarist Toby Wren for an intimate trio project. Five of the 10 tracks are Karlen originals and there are traditional pieces, plus compositions by Wren and Newcomb.

Karlen says he doesn’t see much difference in using a piece by Schubert or playing a tune from the Great American Songbook. That idea is demonstrated by including an arrangement of Schubert’s Serenade where the classical-sounding guitar intro prefaces the arrival of Karlen’s laconic sax, soon to improvise melodically on Schubert’s classic composition as piano and guitar lay out a gentle accompaniment.

Ten Ten, a composition by Wren, has a relaxed, bluesy feel. Newcomb’s composition Driftwood features some fine piano accompaniment for Karlen’s tranquilly floating sax, while Wren’s guitar solo reaches into the upper register as the piece moves serenely along. The religious folk song Kyrie is treated reverently and fits well into the album’s moody atmosphere.

This is a collection of rhythmless, colourful interpretations in unhurried settings where peaceful interplay between sax, guitar and piano is explored with ability and sensitivity.

We are very excited to launch this album at the beautiful Old Museum Building in Brisbane followed by performances in Sydney, Melbourne, The Wangaratta Jazz Festival, Cairns and Currumbin.

The three of us have been very busy with this project during the year as all the material was inspired by themes of hope, love, fear separation as told through letters and journals from soldiers and families affected by World War 1. We spent a large amount of time reading through letters and diaries from archives including the State Archives of Queensland, the State Library of Queensland and the National Archives. We then set about drawing inspiration from many of these letters and journals and composing music around many of the themes that we encountered. This has been a very intense process and a very rewarding project. It was very challenging maintain a respectful connection to the people of our military past while not glorifying war and I know that all three of us have learned a great deal through undertaking this project. The themes that we chose to explore have a direct link to people from the ANZAC history but are common to all people from both sides of the battles. When I began to understand this, I felt much more comfortable exploring all these very charged themes and concepts and thinking about how to approach the creation of musical material.

Please come along to this event if you can. It will be a very special evening of music and we will have copies of our CD, vinyl(!) and score books with the lyrics and accompanying commentary on each piece.

Tickets and more information can be found here:
http://oldmuseum.org/?p=3561

http://www.bfkmusic.com/Rafael Karlentag:www.rafaelkarlen.com,2005:Post/38632722015-09-23T13:12:57+10:002015-09-23T13:14:14+10:00A short behind the scenes documentary of the new Berardi/Foran/Karlen AlbumHere is a short little documentary with Kristin Berardi, Sean Foran and I talking about our latest project and our new album. We are composing original material inspired by themes from ANZAC letters. This music will explores themes of hope, fear, separation, loss and love, and conditions of war. Drawing on sounds from jazz and folk music, it will be a new project for all of us, one that we feel audiences will enjoy (as will we!). These themes are very charged so it has been a very enriching process exploring handwritten letters, journals and postcards from families and soldiers during the First World War and then trying to respond to and explore some of these themes through music.

4 stars

This unusual album is a Brisbane production, recorded at the University of Queensland, featuring the music of saxophonist Rafael Karlen. It’s a blend of elements of jazz and contemporary classical music, what used to be called crossover. In addition to Karlen’s tenor sax the group includes his long-term pianist Steve Newcomb plus the Rosenberg String Quartet. Much of the material was composed as part of Karlen’s masters degree at the University of York, England. The mood throughout is languid and contemplative with the classical aspects dominant. Strictly it’s not a jazz album, more a Western art music collection.

The opener If Not Now, When? begins with a delicate cello ostinato, soon joined by the other strings in a gentle, rolling theme, smoothing an entrance for Karlen’s tenor sax as the piano adds embellishments.

It’s difficult to ascertain how much of these pieces is composed and which passages are improvised, but a good deal of the tenor sax solo in the opener could well be improvised, albeit along classical rather than jazz lines.

Bounces Nicely certainly does that: after a pizzicato intro the tenor springs in with a solo that’s an impressive mix of classical phrases with muted jazz references. The title track portrays its theme very sensitively with the tenor floating over piano and strings in a nostalgic mix of romance and memory.

The playing in this collection is of a very high standard and the arrangements achieve Karlen’s stated aims of contrast, coherence and interest. This is perfect music for a quietly lethargic and introspective Sunday afternoon."

In recent years there has been a proliferation of chamber jazz recordings, as classically trained/jazz-enthralled musicians bring together two of their loves in the same expression. Rafael Karlen's recent example of this is a gorgeous display. It's one beautiful vignette after another, as waves of harmonies from a string quartet are swept along by the gusts of melodic interplay between saxophonist Karlen and pianist Steve Newcomb. There is an elegance and warmth to this music that abides when the music drifts languorously or grows animated with sudden bursts of motion. The balance between composition and improvisation gives the ear a bit of structure to rely upon while keeping on its toes. Most of all, this music is about as beautiful as it gets. — Dave Sumner'

'After many years of wowing Brisbane jazz fans with their original big band repertoire, the band has amassed over 100 pieces specifically written with EMO in mind. EMO will be recording this journey through Brisbane jazz at what has quickly grown to be the go-to Brisbane venue for original improvised music, JMI Live. Many of the pieces to be recorded were debuted at this very venue, so it seems only fitting to bring them back to their spiritual home to be put down on record. With stalwart Brisbane composers and arrangers such as Andrew Garton, Rafael Karlen, Josh Hatcher and Wade Gregory to be featured, the recording sessions promise to be two great nights of sophisticated yet energetic musicianship.'

More information can be found by clicking the link below
http://www.jazz.qld.edu.au/events/emo-big-band-wed-thur-10/Rafael Karlentag:www.rafaelkarlen.com,2005:Post/25934832014-02-17T21:28:10+11:002014-02-17T21:30:34+11:00Debut performance with the new Rafael Karlen Trio, 25/2/14 at The Centre, BeaudesertI am very excited and feel privileged to perform with my new trio with award winning vocalist Kristin Berardi and super-talented pianist Steve Newcomb at an Arts Dinner to support the development of Creative and Cultural Industries across and beyond the Scenic Rim and to launch the 2014 Studios & Events booklet.

This is a free event but bookings are recommended.
