Debut performance with the new Rafael Karlen Trio, 25/2/14 at The Centre, Beaudesert 

I am very excited and feel privileged to perform with my new trio with award winning vocalist Kristin Berardi and super-talented pianist Steve Newcomb at an Arts Dinner to support the development of Creative and Cultural Industries across and beyond the Scenic Rim and to launch the 2014 Studios & Events booklet.

New recording with string quartet, piano and saxophone 

I am thrilled to be preparing for an upcoming recording of my music for string quartet, piano and saxophone. The recording will feature renowned pianist Steve Newcomb along with the Rosenberg String Quartet. It was made possible with support from an Arts Queenland Project and Program Fund Grant.

There will be several performances throughout 2014 so please stay tuned for these.

We will go into the studio in January- I'm super excited!!

The Rooftops perform at Black Bear Lodge 15/12/13 

The Rooftops will have one show only in Australia for 2013!! Back with the original line-up and following up from a big show in Cambodia earlier this year, The Rooftops hit Black Bear Lodge for one night with the support of Brodie Graham and Rivermouth. Doors open at 7pm and tix are available through Oztix.

Hints and Traces at the Turnaround Jazz Club 15/8 

There is a special performance coming up next week that I would like to invite you all to.

Hints and Traces is a Jazz quartet featuring original material and contemporary European Jazz compositions and we will be performing at the Turnaround Jazz Club.

We will play compositions by Sean Foran and I alongside works by Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, Kenny Wheeler and Eberhard Weber.

It will be a double bill with the Chris Poulsen Trio at 8pm followed by Hints and Traces at 9pm.
$10 on the door.

Birthday show 4 June 

Rafael Karlen and Friends perform at the Jazz Party Tuesday at Blackbear Lodge Tuesday June 4

Also as part of the Brisbane International Jazz Festival, this group will play at the Blackbear lodge for the Jazz Party Tuesday series. This is also my Birthday so please come down and celebrate with me! We will be playing lively, groovehappy Jazz tunes ranging from 60’s Freddie Hubbard to material by the energetic Swedish group Oddjob. There will be three groups performing including the wonderful singer, Lauren Lucille.

Brisbane International Jazz Festival show, May 31 

Rafael Karlen Quartet perform at the Brisbane Jazz Club as part of the Brisbane International Jazz Festival on Friday May 31

I am very excited to lead an outstanding quartet for a performance at the Brisbane Jazz Club as part of the Brisbane International Jazz Festival. I will be joined by renowned musicians Stephen Russell on piano, Owen Newcomb on bass and Joe Marchisella on drums. We will perform my original material alongside compositions by many important jazz composers including Wayne Shorter, Billy Strayhorn, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Kenny Wheeler, Ralph Towner and many more.

Hints and Traces

Hints and Traces is a new project bringing together pianist/composer Sean Foran, bassist Peter Walters and drummer Nathan Goldman and myself in a quartet setting.
Together we will explore original material by Sean Foran and myself along with selected contemporary Jazz compositions by some of Europe's leading improvising musicians.
The concert will commence with a duo set by Sean and I after which we will be joined by Peter Walters on bass and Nathan Goldman on Drums for the second half.

Brisbane City Hall Performances 6th and 7th April 

As part of the Re-dedication Celebrations at the Brisbane City Hall, the Rafael Karlen Duo will perform on both Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th of April in the very very large Concert Hall. This is a free event with more free music and activities continuing for the entire week.

E.M.O feature the Music of Rafael Karlen 5/3/13 

The Brisbane-based big band, The Enthusisatic Musician's Orchestra will be featuring my music at the Black Bear Lodge on Tuesday, 5 March at 9pm. This should be a really great night as it is part of the Tuesday Jazz Party series (the first Tuesday of every month). This ensemble is hard working and features really nice players so I'm very excited to have them playing my music.

Doors open at 7pm. $5 cover on the door. Lots of great music at a great venue. I'm looking forward to it
